The destination: Archaeological and cultural heritage sites like San Agustín and Tierradentro, with their skillfully carved volcanic stone sculptures, monuments and tombs, take you back to ancient times in the midst of wild, green Andean landscapes. Not far from these lush hills and fresh climate lies the Tatacoa Desert, known for its mysterious eroded landscapes, as well as the origin of the majestic Río Magdalena, Colombia’s lifeline.
The people: The local communities carry ancestral indigenous wisdom in their hearts and are always eager to share their stories.
Typical food: Sancocho de gallina [saŋ 'ko tʃo ðe ɣa 'ʎj na] = chicken soup/stew, and empanadas de pipián ['pi pjan] = empanadas filled with potato and peanut
Fun fact: The Tatacoa Desert is actually a dry tropical forest, not a true desert in the strict sense of the term.
